We are just evaluating an issue with OCS r2 and kb974571 which is one of October’s security updates which has just been released.
Installing the kb causes OCS FE services to fail to start and erroneously reports that the installation is an eval which has expired. Uninstalling the update resolves the issue. At present this may only affect pool/fe servers and edge servers.
Currently we have another example of this further to the one reported below.
The blog post below has plenty of detail. We are raising with Microsoft and will add more detail ourselves once this is understood.

It appears there are some incompatibilities with recently released critical update kb948496. The symptoms manifest themselves as intermittent connectivity and throughput issues, once the update has been installed and the server restarted.
We are advising customers to ensure that HP NIC drivers are up to date prior to installing this update.

After using the command line described:
Wdsutil /Verbose /Progress /Uninitialize-Server
the services will not start, so the next step is to add the necessary files for WDS legacy to start. Run WDS legacy consol and it will prompt you for a CD then you will need to specify a Windows image name (don’t take the default as it is likely this is what you chose when you set the first CCS image up)
After this you will need to reinitialise the WDS server
Wdsutil /Verbose /Progress /initialize-Server /Reminst:<RIS REminst Folder>
